You pissed about the new quality of Cameesa Tees?
On March 16th, 2009, we decided to decrease our support amount from $20 down to $10. However, we failed to mention that lowering this amount would require 2 huge changes in Cameesa Tees.
The 2 main changes would include:
1. Switching from American Apparel to Tultex Tees.
2. Switching from 'printed' tags to 'sewn-in' tags.
While lowering the support amount we failed to mention that these changes would be happening. Listening to the outrage, and anger of the Cameesa community for the past two weeks has been very painful for us, and it is once again decision time.
From the reaction of the community it sounds like everyone is pretty upset about the switch to Tultex tees and 'sewn-in' tags.
We are still very new at this and are trying to figure things out, although you may not care. Our #1 goal is making you happy and we previously believed that price-sensitivity vs. Quality was a large issue.
We are considering on raising support prices to $15, and bringing back American Apparel Tees and 'printed-in' tags.
We would love to hear your thoughts on this. We do feel like we are taking away from you by raising the support amount from $10 to $15, but the quality of our product will quickly increase again.

I'm not to picky about the shirt to be honest, but I did prefer the printed tag, Tultex is a nice fit, but a bit more thin then the AA shirts.
I have been trying out some other sites so I haven't been around that much, but I am committed to helping you guys out, your direct feedback to the community is a real breath of fresh air as far as shirt sites go, so you win in that category.
I have noticed a few other sites adopt a model of limited time discounts on tees. All shirts $13 for one week kind of thing. These sites are only dealing with one design so the main challenge would be how to offer a discounted limited time support for multiple shirts, then go back up to say $20.00 for a regular support amount.
I don't know if it would work or not.
$15 is worth a try.
Would eliminating store credit in exchange for an increased residual as an alternative payment to artist work?
Or Eliminating store credit in exchange for a slightly larger cash only price work.
or just a cash only prize?

And I thought the Tultex shirts were a lot thinner than AA, not thicker. I've been the one really complaining about how thin my Cheer Up is. To be honest, the tag doesn't really bother me; I just thought the printed tag was neat. I didn't really notice the shirt being thinner on Demitri because it was a darker shirt.
I would happily do the $15 for a shirt thick enough to actually wear.
- AGrant311 commented 427 days ago
oops yeah you are right I meant thiner.
- quakerninja commented 427 days ago
The printed tag was nice, but by no means is that necessary. I'd rather have an AA shirt then a printed tag.
I was a little disappointed when I got my Lady of Guadalupe shirt cause I could tell right away it wasn't AA. The feel of Tultex is still soft and lighter which is good, but the neck is bigger than my liking, the width is wider than AA and it shrunk too much in length - which may be due to the fact that it is a white shirt. However, none of my light AA shirts have shrunk that badly.
I wouldn't totally cross-off Tultex, cause I don't own any dark shirts in that brand for comparison but I know I won't be buying anymore light shirts of it.
I think Quaker is on the right track of trying to find alternative options. You could always try another brand shirt, but I think you are always going to run into issues of people not liking a certain brand. Even though AA seems to be the most popular, some people still don't like the shorter sleeves or the snug fit of it.
$15 support isn't a total killer for me but the $10 is such a nice price point. I think the $12-$13 would work best.
Maybe have the support amount go up per design once it reaches a certain point. $10 to start off, $13 after the $250 support point and $15 after the $400 mark. That probably would make supporting multiple designs at once difficult though.

I'm not gonna leave either way, the shirt blanks don't matter as much to me as most... However the huge tags are a bit of a nuisance. Anyway, my vote goes to $15 for supports to increase quality. I don't know how much extra it would cost, but maybe you could offer a tiered type of support system? For those concerned about cost, the (now)normal $10, for those who want higher quality, $15. Or even bump it back up to $20 and include free shipping, that way you wouldn't have to worry about a designing reaching an odd amount of support(i.e. $495).
- Mixer23 commented 427 days ago
I vote for raising the price back up to $15 or $20 to get a better quality blank and more accurate printing.
- 2thFairy commented 426 days ago
Didn't the old $20 support include the shipping? I'm all for the better quality and i will continue to support designs at that price for a quality product. However, free shipping is not much of an incentive for most people to support a shirt that might or might not get printed and possibly wait 3 months for it to do so.
Obviously everyone wants great quality but it always boils down to what price would they pay. Offering incentives increases the likeliness of someone to pay more then they would be accustomed too. Maybe give $2 store credit to each supporter once a shirt goes to print. Randomly select supporters to receive a free shirt of their choice when a shirt goes to print. Offer the $10 support amount only in the first 24 hours a shirt is up for support which can also bring people back to the site everyday. Another incentive would be to offer a higher payout to the artists which can bring in some bigger name designers. Not many designers like the "get x amount for each shirt sold". Maybe up it to $350 and then offer an additonal $100 each time a certain amount of shirts are sold.
Hmm... those are just some of my suggestions. I should stop drinking and rambling.
Anyway, I believe Cameesa is going to be huge and it will only take time before you find that perfect balance that will help it continue to grow. I am very impressed with the way every situation has been handled and tip my hat to you all.
- Griggitee commented 426 days ago
Yes, it did include the free shipping before. I just threw that in there, because I know when you get close to $25 for a shirt(especially pre-ordering) your support base becomes even more thin, and most are less likely to support many designs going to print at once.
- Mixer23 commented 426 days ago
I'd be willing to pay $15 for the support if it meant higher quality. I think that $10 was a nice move since it didn't require too much of a commitment, but $15 is still doable. I don't know how the printed-in tags used to be, but I if you guys could print the name of the artist in the tag, that'd be cool... I always loved how Threadless does that.
- adamsw216 commented 426 days ago
The tags do not matter to me. The quality of the shirt itself is more important. I would be willing to pay more to be sure the shirt will last a long time. I'm not an artist, so cannot comment on those issues.
- Janie commented 426 days ago
I put on my Cheer Up She Found You shirt and it is skinnier through the torso. I'd rather pay $15 or $20 for a shirt I know is going to fit me - because with the size I've been ordering the new shirt doesn't fit.
- SassBot5001 commented 426 days ago
I feel for You SassBot...My Foo Dog shirt, which they say is on AA, doesn't fit either in my regular size. I think it was mislabeled and because it was sent to me so late (I was an original supporter but didn't get it until a week or so ago), they are all out of my size and even the next size up. So I'm out of luck.
So it really doesn't matter how much we pay to support a shirt..until they figure out other things like getting the correct tags (or no tags) in shirts and getting them shipped out to supporters before the general public in case things go wrong like in my case so we can exchange them, there will be unhappy customers like me.
- snarkygal commented 425 days ago
I don't mind the new shirts or the tags, so I personally like the $10 supports. The new tees seem to fit me the same as an AA, though. If they didn't, I'd be bitching. And I can see why people are complaining. I probably wouldn't support nearly as many designs at $20, but I'd still support the ones that I really love.
- BootsBoots commented 424 days ago
I must say that when I got Dimitri I was a bit disappointed in the fit of the shirt. I'm a short curvy person and this shirt seemed thinner, smaller, and longer. Mostly the longer part bothered me, I could pull it down over my butt, not that it really fits over my hips to wear it that way so it ends up all bunched up around the waist.
My first thought was that I probably wouldn't support anything else, why spend money on something that I can't wear or looks bad on me. I've probably softened up on that now but would gladly pay a bit more for something that is more wearable for me.
- katzhund commented 423 days ago
I got Listen to B-side (AA) and later got coq music (Tultex). Off course AA is the best-fit and I want only the Best so i would pay slightly upper from $10 for a sick design. Beforehand, they should re-calibrate their cost more carefully for them to sustain in this business. I've been seeing this kind of problem in Sellaband, a music crowdfunding, that they can handle it very good up until now by hearing voice of believers (their terms for supporter).
- koalakuskus commented 423 days ago
I recently bought the Fuu Dog and Forbidden Kiss outright, not as early support. Both had the sewn in tags and I can only assume where the Tultex shirts.
They both felt a little long for me, even with a ladies small, however the thinness doesn't bother me, and wouldn't deter me from buying future shirts in the least bit. But, I can see where people buying shirts from me might be a bit off put by the quality.
I don't think paying $15 for the AA would keep people from supporting.
But have you considered offering both types for different price levels of support? If you make it clear the difference between the two types of shirts, and offer the AA for $15 and the Tultex for $10 in early support, then have each require 250 of the final 500, you can please both those wanting cheap shirts and those wanting the higher quality.
- Skulldog commented 422 days ago
@Skulldog, thanks for the pointers.
Forbidden Kiss is AA, and Foo Dog is actually AA as well. The length varies with every Tee created because they are not that careful when cutting them down to the centimeter, so your next AA tee maybe a little shorter, or maybe not.
Unfortunately, having two different types of tees on the site will only cause mass confusion, and we have learned that that is the last thing we want to do.
We are still discussing on what the best move will be on Tultex vs. AA.
- kamil commented 422 days ago
If you're taking a vote, I vote for AA
- Dalmatinac commented 422 days ago
I like AA shirts alot, but havent tried one of these Tultex shirts yet. I'll have to give my two cents on that when i get my Coq Music. As for the tags, either or for me.
- campbel7 commented 420 days ago
Are tags really an issue? I never look inside my shirt, and neither does anyone else :(
I'm not supporting 20$ shirts. And 15$ shirts are pushing it; I would only support a few, if any, at that price.
I'm wearing Cheer Up right now, and it fits just as well as all my AA shirts. It'a not thin nor tight. I didn't even know it was a different brand.
- copo commented 420 days ago
I would prefer Tultex as long as the price stays at $10. As copo said, $15 is pushing it. I would greatly cut-down on my own supports. $20 is too much. I doubt I would support anything at that price. I do slightly prefer AA to tultex in terms of quality, but I don't think it's worth the price. My Cheer up she found you shirt is fine. I don't find it paper-thin and it's not see-through. It also fits fine. Sure, it's got a big tag, but no one sees the tag and I can always cut it out.
Obviously there are some people who will be unhappy with any decision you make, but personally I would prefer things to stay the way they are.
- Razela commented 420 days ago
I think 20 bucks is a little much for a tshirt, I totally support 15 bucks for a high quality shirt though :)
Im not much of a fan for low quality shirts (especially thin ones), and especially not for ten bucks. I personally have never gotten a shirt from cameesa yet, but this "thin shirt" quality sounds awful.
As for the tag- who cares? Just cut the tag off if it really bothers you that much :)
As a girl though- thin shirts are rather hazardous if you dont want your bra line shown off :S (Im assuming when they talk about thin- they mean this thin and see through)
- Fredthecow commented 420 days ago
@Fredthecow -- Yes, they're that kind of thin. On my "Cheer Up, She Found You" (yellow) you can see my tats and nips quite clearly :-/
Bring back the AA!
- f7eleven commented 419 days ago
I posted in the other thread, but I just wanted to reiterate that American Apparel yellow shirts also suffer from "see through syndrome." Just look through the comments when Woot prints a yellow tee, and you will see lots of complaints from guys and girls about nipples and bras being seen through the shirt. I don't think simply switching back to AA would solve that problem. The color of the shirt has to be taken into account.
I will say this though, although I think "Cheer Up" printed very well, I do agree the thickness of the shirt needs to come up, at least to AA standards. If you are going to try to move up to $15, it better be AA. If $20, better start printing on the shirts Teefury does. However, I will rarely support at $15, and $20 is outrageous for a T-shirt, sorry. I get fantastic tees from Woot and Teefury with fun artwork for $10 routinely...if Cameesa starts trying to charge $20, you will have a sad former customer who wishes things would have gone differently.
- pakrem commented 419 days ago
from what ive read, so far, i guess im the minority on this, but personally I have only supported designs because the support amount is $10. Paying $20 for a shirt seems stupid to me, though I guess im just cheap like that. Its the reason ive never bought a shirt from dbh. I was not disappointed with the fit of my sicXo shirt, and the tag is a nonissue. if you dont like sewn in, then its easy enough to remove it when you get your shirt. Frankly, i don't think I will be frequenting this site anymore looking for new cool designs if the support amount goes up, even with AA shirts (unless the $15 support includes shipping, since its already about $13.50 for a support for me once you factor in shipping).
just my $.02
- kjd5053 commented 400 days ago
Tultex has a lower base price for the fashion fit tees. You may save a couple of bucks per tee but those Tultex tees shrink 20% or more. If you want to continue with quality products don't hesitate to stick with AA. On another note, Alternative does some pretty decent cuts, styles, and dyes and they are about the same cost as Tultex. The only thing Tultex has going is the tear away tags.
- BeeryMethod commented 400 days ago
The only shirt I have from here so far is Edgar's and it was done in the original way. I missed out on missmonster's. Have to say I am glad I did now. I have ZERO regrets paying $20 flat to get Edgar's shirt. This whole shipping and price changing thing was not nifty imo. Couldn't you just do like $15 flat and go with the cheap tag? Don't get me wrong, I like that my shirt says Edgar made it, but in the real world that's not a big deal.
Therefore: my vote is original shirt brand, cheapest tag option. hope this will result is a $15 w/ no shipping option.
Will this result in more consistant color on prints again?
- peppersagooddog commented 400 days ago
I bought a Fuu Dog shirt. I don't mind the tag at all. But it was the tightest women's XL I've ever bought. I love the shirt but won't be wearing it any time soon.
- Dragonarium commented 399 days ago
i actually like shirts that are tighter and longer...so call me crazy, but the tultex sounds more appealing to me. i've yet to receive one in person though.
also -- am i blind, or are there NO women's size XS shirts for any of the current designs? are there lots of other tiny ladies like me on the site, or is there just so little demand for that size that it's rarely printed on?
- bara-chan commented 399 days ago
On sizing and fit: I've heard Tultex's sizing is more consistent than AA's, which I've noticed can be a little sketchy. I also like the longer Tultex fit and I love the thinner weight--but I'd want a good size chart to make sure I'm ordering the right size before I buy.
On shrinkage: Most all-cotton tees will shrink a little in the wash. I wash cold and dry low and haven't had a problem yet. I've seen complaints though that the Tultex shrink/stretch to uselessness after a few washings.
On tags: I agree tear-out tags aren't too bad, but I love the printed ones--even a little bit of tag can crazy irritate the back of my neck. Again, I've heard of problems with the tear-out tags in Tultex tees.
One other nice feature of AA is they're American made, so non-sweatshop. I know Tultex has non-US factories, anyone know their labor policy? That would matter to me (and I'm cynical, so I tend to worry that the shirts are cheaper because they're paying workers less to make them).
- koikuri commented 399 days ago
I'm all for American Apparel. I paid the higher amount to support a shirt back then - and would do it again. I have at least 20 shirts that are AA and they have fit consistently through out. I know what I am getting when I buy an AA shirt.
Another thing, AA has a longer and slimmer fit than Tultex, so I don't know why some think that Tultex has the longer fit. I love my 'Lady of Guadalupe' shirt but it shrunk so short that I wouldn't wear it out in public without people thinking that I am some oaf that doesn't know how to buy a shirt in the right size.
As far as the other shirt companies tees, Teefury shirts are soft and thicker but they seem to vary a lot in size. Both my friend and myself have had shirts that fit great and others that have shrunk to unwearable. I think they use a Gildan style shirt but I have to REALLY like a design for me to gamble on picking something up from them, and that's at $9. Threadless and DBH have some awesome designs and I would pay the $24 for them except that their "custom" made shirts are pretty much the same as Tultex. I have only gotten one shirt from each and they both shrunk way short which has kept me from buying a second shirt from them. Again, none of my AA shirts have shrunk to a point where I won't where them.
My only other comment is about the AIstyle shirts. I have a couple of those and they are of good quality. They are soft, have a wider fit and are a bit thicker, but I haven't had any issues of them shrinking. I'd prefer AA over AIstyle because it can be a little too heavy to wear on hot summer days, but at least it is of good quality and consistency that I would be comfortable in buying them.
- Griggitee commented 399 days ago
teefury uses alstyle lol.
- peppersagooddog commented 398 days ago
LOL. Teefury uses Gildan 2000 which are "supposed" to fit like AIstyle.
- Griggitee commented 398 days ago
no sir, you are sadly wrong.
teefury uses alstyle.
if you still dont believe me GO LOOK IT UP THERE.
or idk ASK ANYONE WORKING THERE.
- peppersagooddog commented 397 days ago
here, i will even HELP you.
link to teefury thread
this is the thread about the thread about the thread that says all throughtout how they USE ALSTYLE.
or you could go ask jimiyo or wotto or mj or sonmi or any number of other people.
or you could continue to argue with me.
- peppersagooddog commented 397 days ago
I love the Teefury shirts the best of all the shirt sites I have bought from so far, even more so than the AA shirts Woot uses. Teefury XL is an actual XL and has a nice thick feel to it. AA XL fit closer to L and are a little thinner.
The yellow shirts that "Cheer Up" were printed on are a tad too thin for my taste.
- pakrem commented 397 days ago
That thread is 46 WEEKS old and says when they launched that they used AIstyle. In a more recent thread on emptees it was asked how Teefury tees fit, which Jimiyo responded with gildan 2000. you can read it here: http://emptees.com/posts/47511-teefury-tees-how-do-they-fit
